PUCK DROP
TUESDAY, MAY 9, 2023

The Stratford Hockey Club would like to thank Alumni Rick Kelly and Mark Maue for dropping the puck at Game 7 of the Sutherland Cup finals (vs Leamington Flyers) on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.

Rick Kelly is a Stratford Minor Hockey product who played for the Stratford Cullitons from 1980 to 1985 and winning 3 Cherrey Cups and appearing in 2 Sutherland Cup finals against the Burlington Cougars in 1981 and Henry Carr Crusaders in 1983.  Rick jumped from Jr. B to professional hockey in 1985 with Mohawk Valley, and finished in Daytona Beach with a stop in Dallas. Rick has had success coaching in California winning multiple national championships and has enjoyed working in the agency business as well.

Mark Maue is a product of the Kitchener Minor Hockey system. The late Jack Nairn (Coach) brought Maue in at the deadline in 1980 for his heavy shot and overall toughness. Unfortunately Stratford would lose to Burlington in Game 6 of the Sutherland Cup that year. Maue would go on to play 2 more years and would wear the “C” in his final year (1982/83) and lead all scorers in the Sutherland Cup final against Henry Carr Crusaders.  Mark is also an accomplished golfer having played on the Canadian Tour for several years and as a PGA teaching professional to this day. Fans from that time will never forget the Ed Olczyk face off win to Maue who roofed a slapshot over London’s Craig Billington with 7 seconds left.  Mark and his wife Michelle now reside in Woodstock.

From the Desk of Jason Clarke
DIRECTOR OF HOCKEY OPERATIONS

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every single person in different ways since March of 2020. Families, work, business and sports have all suffered greatly with the restrictions and rolling lockdowns we’ve seen. It is my hope that with vaccines our current lockdown hopefully expiring in June we can get back to the life we all are craving.

The Stratford Warriors have quietly had to say goodbye to our graduating players like many other teams without official recognition. Our plan is to do this when restrictions allow. For now we will be saying thanks the best way we can through our social media accounts.

When the pandemic hit and cancelled the 2019/2020 season we had graduates Mitchell Casey, Clayton Lewis, Alex Grant and Jacob Uridil have their final run cut short.

This past season 2020/2021 which never got going saw Malcolm McLeod, Tyler Parr, Evan Dowd, Rhett Kimmel and Drew Welsh unable to play their final season.

Nine players who had the final buzzer sounded unfortunately to a pandemic and not by competition. We will feature these members of our hockey club in the coming days. We wish each and every one of you the very best and we will strive to keep the history & traditions going.

GRADUATING PLAYERS
We would like to thank our “1999” players Jacob, Clayton, Alex and Mitchell who graduated at the end of the 2019-2020 season as well as our “2000” players Tyler, Rhett, Malcolm, Drew and Evan who graduated at the end of the 2020-2021 season.

GEORGE VAN SLYCK REMEMBERED – Feb 2021

On Feb 5/21, the Stratford Warriors/ Cullitons lost a dedicated and respected Board Member, George Van Slyck. George was a valued member who was there to help and work on any projects to support the Stratford Hockey Club. George was well respected within the community and always had time to talk with you whether it was family, hockey or education. George would share all kinds of hockey stories about his beloved Warrior/Culliton teams. He was also dedicated to his family as a husband, father and grandfather and would always chat about his family. When I joined the Board, George was always there to direct and give advice to support you. You would find George in his regular seat supporting his favorite team. Before games, you would find George by the dressing room and in the front lobby sharing his thoughts and stories. When I took over as the Billeting Chair, George was in charge of education and had everything down to a tee. We all learned a lot from George. When George was in the hospital, he would call to make sure that all players that needed educational support were look after. That was the kind of person George was. To Dianne, Katie and Gillian and families, we send our sincere condolences on behalf of the Stratford Warrior Hockey Club. George will be missed by all. Rest in Peace George.  — Jamie Nigro, President, Stratford Hockey Club

REMEMBERING DENIS FLANAGAN – Nov 2018

The Stratford Jr. B. Hockey Club join the City of Stratford and the entire hockey community in mourning the passing of local hockey legend, Denis ( Dinny) Flanagan on November 25, 2018. Dinny became Manager of The Stratford Cullitons in their inaugural season in 1975 and he spent the next 21 seasons helping create one of the finest Junior Hockey organizations in the province before retiring in 1996.

His teams never finished lower than third place. In twenty-one seasons, the Cullitons finished first fifteen times, won ten league titles and five O.H.A. Championships. The . overall record of the Cullitons under Dinny’s guidance is an amazing 735 wins, 159 losses and 36 ties. Recently, Dinny became the recipient of the highest award … O.H.A. Gold Stick Award.

The Warriors Family, and our fans, are deeply indebted to Dinny for all that he gave to us over the years. We will miss him dearly, but we know that his presence will forever be felt by our club and our city.

ALUMNI GAME – Dec 2017

On December 13, 2017, this year’s Stratford Warriors team took on a team of Stratford Jr B Alumni. Alumni included players with notable success in both the NHL and Europe including Tim Taylor (2 Stanley Cups), Greg deVries (1 Stanley Cup), Boyd Devereaux (1 Stanley Cup) and Mike Martin (1 Calder Cup). Two alumni still retain team records for the club — Erik Anderson (Most Points in a Season) and Jason Mervyn (Most Goals in a Season)! Prior to the game, fans had the opportunity to skate with the players and get autographs. The game was a joint fundraiser between the Stratford Hockey Club and the local Heart & Stroke chapter — we appreciate the support of the players, the alumni and all our fantastic Warrior fans!

STRATFORD WARRIORS:  NEW LOGO UNVEILED – June 2017

The Stratford Hockey Club and the Stratford Minor Hockey Association proudly unveiled their new logo on June 1, 2017.

The two hockey organizations offered a logo design contest during 2016 in their quest for a new, shared logo. Over 175 entries were received. The winning logo, designed by Mike Lee of Stratford, maintains the traditional red and blue colours of both organizations but incorporates several classic Stratford elements…

“With it, I’ve tried to create a design with layers of meaning for the City of Stratford. The focal point of the logo is the Warrior himself. An imagined knight of the Elizabethan era. This menacing knight would be the victor in any Shakespearean tragedy. In the lower part of the knight’s armoured crest, a powerful swan. Sentinel of the City of Stratford. Wings stretched wide in victory and a look of fearlessness. Subtler layers of subtext can be found in the twin “W’s” formed by the knight’s red cape. As well as a graphic representation of the Festival Theatre’s scalloped roof detail in the shadow of the knight’s armoured shoulder plates.”

It all comes together in a unique and creative design — both organizations look forward to the fresh new look and are excited to bring their new logo to the ice for the 2017-2018 season!

JUSTIN BIEBER IS A FAN – April 2017

In January 2013, Justin Bieber unveiled his new inking to fans on his Instagram page and explained the meaning behind the choice of design — the logo of the Stratford Warriors (formerly the Stratford Cullitons).

In January 2015, Calvin Klein released a series of ads featuring Justin Bieber (pictured to the left in black and white) — and his Stratford Warrior logo!

The indian head was the focal crest of the Cullitons/Warriors jerseys for many years and symbolic of hockey in Statford for many years; it was last worn on the Warrior jerseys in the 2016-2017 season as shoulder crests.

The 20-year-old centre fired a rocket of a wrist shot over the shoulder of Elmira goalkeeper Nick Horrigan on a powerplay
at 13:34 of the opening frame, triggering a shower of teddy bears and a comeback by the Stratford Cullitons, who earned an
exciting 3-2 win over the defending Sutherland Cup champion Sugar Kings.

Stratford Motor Products, the official sponsor of the event, gathered up the large collection of stuffed animals with the help of the
